It has recently been announced that the number of internet users in South Africa has passed the 5 million mark for the very first time, finally breaking the 10% mark in internet penetration.

This is the finding of the Internet Access in South Africa Study, conducted by World Wide Worx and Cisco. The reports shows a 15% growth in the number of internet users from last year from 4.6 million to 5.3 million and is expected to grow at a similar rate in 2010 and the 6 million mark will be reached by the end of the year.

Let’s be honest, the internet is still considered by the majority of people in South Africa as being too expensive. However this is set to change drastically with the recent reduction in the costs of broadband connection. This will result in an influx of “new” consumers as more people will be exposed to the internet.

Companies should start realising that there will be more people using the internet, more consumers that will be searching for their products or services online. If you don’t have an online marketing presence or your current online marketing is not up to scratch, I am afraid that you may not be capitalising on the huge impact and benefits that cheaper broadband will bring.

It is imperative in this day and age, especially with the increasing rate of “new” internet users that your company, service or product be able to be found easily online. This can be achieved by implementing an effective Online Marketing Strategy that encompasses all facets of Search Engine Marketing & Optimisation. A successful online marketing strategy should be completely measurable and be able to target the right consumer at the right time.

There are exciting changes that are happening in South Africa, exciting enough to take a few minute and reassess your marketing strategy to ensure that you not only benefit in terms of achieving higher sales volumes but also creating brand awareness & loyalty to a much larger online consumer base.

In tomorrow’s blog we will be going more into detail regarding the effect of broadband caps in South Africa and how it will affect online activity.
